Jewellery Care Policy

Overview

JEWELLERY CARE POLICY

Your Hansuli jewellery is made to be cherished, worn, and passed forward.

Hansuli jewellery carries the character of silver, the craft of the artisan, and the heritage of Uttarakhand.

Silver is a natural metal. Over time, its surface can react with the surrounding environment, body chemistry, moisture, and certain chemicals. As a result, silver jewellery may develop a darker, yellowish, or dull appearance.

This is natural and does not mean that your jewellery is fake, damaged, or defective.

With the right care, your Hansuli jewellery can retain its beauty for years.

Understanding 925 Silver

Where a Hansuli product is identified as 925 Sterling Silver, it generally contains 92.5% silver, with the balance consisting of other metals used to provide the necessary strength and durability.

Pure silver is relatively soft. The additional alloying material helps make jewellery suitable for everyday use.

Because of its composition, 925 silver can naturally undergo surface reactions over time.

Why Does Silver Tarnish?

One of the most common questions we receive is:

“Why has my silver jewellery turned black?”

Silver can react with compounds present in the surrounding environment, particularly sulphur-containing compounds, moisture, and pollutants.

This can create a thin layer of silver compounds, commonly associated with silver sulphide, on the surface.

This surface layer causes the jewellery to appear:

  • Black
  • Grey
  • Yellowish
  • Brownish
  • Dull

This process is known as tarnishing.

Tarnishing is a natural chemical reaction.

It does not automatically mean that the jewellery is fake or low quality.

Factors That Can Increase Tarnishing

The rate at which silver tarnishes varies from person to person and environment to environment.

Tarnishing may happen faster because of:

Humidity

Moisture in the air can accelerate surface reactions.

Sweat

Sweat contains salts and other compounds that may affect silver.

Skin Chemistry

Every person’s skin chemistry is different. Some people may notice silver darkening faster than others.

Perfume & Cosmetics

Perfumes, creams, lotions, makeup, hairspray, and other cosmetic products may contain substances that react with silver.

Pollution

Air pollution can contain sulphur-containing compounds that accelerate tarnishing.

Chlorine

Swimming pools and chlorinated water can adversely affect silver jewellery.

Household Chemicals

Cleaning products, detergents, bleach, and other chemicals may damage or discolour jewellery.

Storage Conditions

Leaving silver exposed to air, moisture, and humidity can accelerate tarnishing.

When Should You Remove Your Jewellery?

We recommend removing Hansuli jewellery before:

  • Bathing
  • Showering
  • Swimming
  • Using a sauna or steam room
  • Exercising
  • Sleeping, particularly with delicate jewellery
  • Washing dishes
  • Cleaning the house
  • Applying perfume
  • Applying lotion or creams
  • Using hair sprays or styling products
  • Handling strong chemicals

This is particularly important for:

  • Chains
  • Fine earrings
  • Delicate silver jewellery
  • Stone-set jewellery
  • Plated jewellery
  • Oxidised jewellery

Perfume & Cosmetics

A simple rule:

Jewellery last, perfume first.

Apply:

1. Moisturiser 2. Makeup 3. Perfume 4. Hair products

Allow products to dry before wearing your jewellery.

Direct contact with perfume, deodorant, creams, oils, sunscreen, and cosmetics may accelerate tarnishing or damage certain finishes.

Sweat & Exercise

Sweat can affect silver jewellery and may accelerate tarnishing.

We recommend removing jewellery before:

  • Gym workouts
  • Running
  • Yoga
  • Sports
  • Heavy physical activity

After wearing jewellery in hot or humid conditions, wipe it gently with a clean, soft cloth before storing it.

Water & Silver Jewellery

Occasional exposure to clean water does not necessarily damage sterling silver immediately.

However, repeated exposure to:

  • Chlorinated water
  • Salt water
  • Soap
  • Shampoo
  • Hard water
  • Chemicals

may accelerate tarnishing or damage certain finishes.

For this reason, Hansuli recommends removing jewellery before bathing and swimming.

Storage

Proper storage is one of the simplest ways to slow tarnishing.

We recommend:

  • Store each jewellery piece separately.
  • Keep jewellery in a clean, dry place.
  • Use the Hansuli jewellery box or pouch where provided.
  • Use an anti-tarnish pouch/strip where appropriate.
  • Keep jewellery away from direct sunlight and excessive heat.
  • Keep jewellery away from bathrooms.
  • Keep jewellery away from perfumes and cosmetics.
  • Close clasps before storing chains.
  • Avoid placing multiple jewellery pieces together.

Jewellery rubbing against other jewellery can cause scratches.

Humidity

Humidity is one of the biggest enemies of stored silver.

Avoid storing silver jewellery:

  • In the bathroom
  • Near sinks
  • In damp cupboards
  • In wet pouches
  • In areas with high humidity

If you live in a humid environment, consider using:

  • Anti-tarnish pouches
  • Silica gel/desiccant packs
  • Airtight jewellery storage
  • Anti-tarnish strips

Do not place moisture-absorbing materials directly against delicate jewellery unless they are designed for jewellery storage.

Cleaning Your Silver Jewellery

For regular cleaning:

1. Take a clean, soft jewellery cloth. 2. Gently wipe the jewellery. 3. Remove surface oils and dirt. 4. Avoid aggressive rubbing. 5. Store the jewellery properly after cleaning.

For lightly tarnished plain silver jewellery, a suitable silver-polishing cloth may be used carefully.

Important:

Do not aggressively polish textured, oxidised, antique-finish, engraved, or intentionally darkened jewellery.

Polishing may remove the intended surface finish.

What Not To Use

Do not use household cleaning products or abrasive materials on Hansuli jewellery.

Avoid:

  • Bleach
  • Toilet cleaners
  • Bathroom cleaners
  • Detergents
  • Baking soda scrubbing
  • Toothpaste
  • Steel wool
  • Rough brushes
  • Abrasive powders
  • Strong acids
  • Unverified jewellery-cleaning chemicals

These can scratch silver, remove finishes, damage stones, or alter the appearance of the jewellery.

Toothpaste & Silver

A common home remedy is to clean silver with toothpaste.

Hansuli does not recommend this method.

Many toothpastes contain abrasive particles that can create fine scratches on silver.

Repeated use may make the surface dull rather than restoring its original appearance.

Use a suitable jewellery polishing cloth or professional cleaning service instead.

Oxidised Silver

Some Hansuli jewellery may intentionally have an oxidised or antique finish.

The darker appearance in such jewellery may be part of the design.

Do not aggressively polish oxidised jewellery because polishing can remove the darker finish and change the intended appearance.

If your oxidised jewellery becomes lighter or uneven, contact Hansuli for professional care or refinishing.

Gold-Plated / Plated Jewellery

Plated jewellery has a thin surface layer over the underlying metal.

The plating may gradually wear because of:

  • Friction
  • Sweat
  • Water
  • Perfume
  • Cosmetics
  • Chemicals
  • Frequent use
  • Polishing

This is normal for plated jewellery and may not constitute a manufacturing defect.

To extend the life of plating:

  • Keep it dry.
  • Avoid perfume and cosmetics.
  • Remove it during exercise.
  • Remove it before bathing/swimming.
  • Store it separately.
  • Do not polish plated jewellery aggressively.

Stone-Set Jewellery

Jewellery containing gemstones, beads, pearls, enamel, or other decorative materials requires additional care.

Avoid:

  • Dropping the jewellery
  • Strong impact
  • Excessive pressure
  • Strong chemicals
  • Ultrasonic cleaning unless specifically approved
  • DIY chemical cleaning

Some stones and decorative materials may be sensitive to heat, chemicals, or sudden temperature changes.

If you are unsure how to clean a particular Hansuli piece, contact us before attempting cleaning.

Pearls & Delicate Materials

Pearls and certain organic or delicate materials require special care.

Avoid contact with:

  • Perfume
  • Hairspray
  • Cosmetics
  • Chlorine
  • Strong chemicals
  • Excessive moisture

Wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth after use and store separately.

Chains

Chains can be particularly vulnerable to pulling and tangling.

To protect your chain:

  • Store it separately.
  • Close the clasp before storing.
  • Avoid pulling knots aggressively.
  • Remove it during exercise and sleep.
  • Do not wear it while bathing.
  • Avoid catching it on clothing.

If a chain becomes tangled, do not pull forcefully. Gently loosen the knot or have it professionally handled.

Earrings

Before wearing earrings:

  • Check that the clasp/back is secure.
  • Check for loose stones or components.
  • Avoid pulling the earring.
  • Store pairs together.

If an earring becomes loose or damaged, stop wearing it and contact Hansuli for inspection.

Rings

Rings are exposed to frequent contact with:

  • Water
  • Soap
  • Chemicals
  • Surfaces
  • Household products

We recommend removing rings before:

  • Washing dishes
  • Cleaning
  • Gardening
  • Exercising
  • Swimming
  • Handling chemicals

Stone-set rings should receive additional care because repeated impact can loosen stone settings.

Bangles & Bracelets

Avoid excessive bending or force.

Do not attempt to manually reshape a silver bangle unless the design is specifically intended to be adjustable.

Excessive force can cause:

  • Cracks
  • Deformation
  • Solder-joint failure
  • Surface damage

If your bangle has changed shape, contact Hansuli for professional inspection.

Traditional & Heritage Jewellery

Traditional jewellery often contains intricate details, delicate elements, textured surfaces, and handcrafted components.

Such pieces should be treated with particular care.

Avoid:

  • Pulling
  • Bending
  • Twisting
  • Excessive pressure
  • Harsh polishing
  • Chemical cleaning

Hansuli recommends professional cleaning and restoration for delicate heritage-inspired pieces.

Daily-Wear Jewellery

Some Hansuli pieces may be suitable for regular use, while others may be intended primarily for occasional wear.

Customers should always consider:

  • Design
  • Thickness
  • Stone setting
  • Construction
  • Finish
  • Intended use

A jewellery piece designed for occasional wear may not be suitable for continuous everyday use.

After-Wear Routine

A simple Hansuli care routine:

After wearing

Step 1: Remove jewellery.

Step 2: Wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth.

Step 3: Allow it to be completely dry.

Step 4: Store it separately.

Step 5: Keep it inside an appropriate jewellery box or anti-tarnish pouch.

This small routine can significantly reduce unnecessary exposure to moisture and chemicals.

If Your Silver Has Turned Black

Don’t worry.

A blackened silver surface can often be cleaned or professionally restored.

The darkening is generally a surface reaction and does not automatically mean that the silver underneath has been damaged.

Depending on the jewellery, Hansuli may recommend:

  • Gentle cleaning
  • Professional polishing
  • Tarnish removal
  • Re-oxidisation
  • Re-plating
  • Restoration

Charges may apply depending on the service required.

When Not To Clean It Yourself

Please contact Hansuli before cleaning if your jewellery:

  • Contains delicate gemstones
  • Is antique or heirloom jewellery
  • Has an oxidised finish
  • Is gold plated
  • Has intricate engraving
  • Has loose stones
  • Has a fragile structure
  • Has already undergone repairs
  • Has significant damage

Professional cleaning may be safer than home cleaning.

Repair Before Wear

If you notice:

  • Loose stones
  • Cracked silver
  • Broken links
  • Loose clasps
  • Bent components
  • Loose hooks
  • Broken solder joints

stop wearing the jewellery until it has been inspected.

Continuing to wear damaged jewellery may cause further damage or result in loss of the jewellery or stones.

Please contact Hansuli regarding our Repair Service.

Natural Wear & Tear

Silver jewellery naturally develops signs of use over time.

These may include:

  • Fine scratches
  • Minor dents
  • Surface dullness
  • Tarnishing
  • Loss of plating
  • Changes in oxidised finish

Such changes are generally considered normal wear and tear and are not automatically manufacturing defects.

Important Note About Silver Purity

Tarnishing is not a reliable method of determining silver purity.

Silver colour changes can occur due to environmental and chemical exposure.

Similarly, the absence of tarnishing does not by itself prove silver purity.

Silver purity should be determined through appropriate testing or certification rather than visual appearance alone.

Professional Cleaning & Restoration

Hansuli may offer professional cleaning, polishing, restoration, re-plating, oxidisation, and repair services.

Such services may be chargeable depending on:

  • Jewellery type
  • Condition
  • Work required
  • Materials required
  • Labour
  • Replacement components

The jewellery may be inspected before the service is performed.

Liability For Improper Care

Hansuli shall not generally be responsible for damage resulting from:

  • Improper cleaning
  • Chemical exposure
  • Accidental damage
  • Impact
  • Negligence
  • Improper storage
  • Unauthorised repair
  • Unauthorised polishing
  • Excessive force
  • Normal wear and tear

Customers are encouraged to contact Hansuli before attempting uncertain cleaning or repair methods.
